Standard Jamaican English, bar models and listening

Switching from Jamaican Creole (JC) to Standard Jamaican English (SJE), bar model word problems, and listening comprehension.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Say it in Standard Jamaican English (Grades 2 to 6)

Pupils change sentences from Jamaican Creole (JC) into Standard Jamaican English (SJE), the terms used in the National Standards Curriculum, in quizzes and by tapping the words into order. The activities treat JC as a language with its own rules and explain each change (for example, "Mi did go" becomes "I went"). They target common Language Arts mistakes such as tense, plurals, "is/are" and double negatives.

๐Ÿ“Š Bar model word problems (Grades 2 to 6)

Pupils first choose the bar model that matches the story, then use it to solve the problem. The models cover part-whole, comparing, equal groups (multiplying and sharing) and fractions of an amount, with Jamaican settings. Choosing the model is the step where word problems usually go wrong, so it is practised every time.

๐Ÿ‘‚ Listening comprehension (Grades 1 to 6)

A passage is read aloud, but the words stay hidden. Pupils can listen a few times, then answer questions. They can see the words at the end. This helps younger pupils and those still learning to read, and builds attention to detail.
